Piazza del Comune

The city square, Piazza del Comune, is the political and cultural centre of the city since its origins and it boasts the Sturinalto fountain (1285), a veritable jewel set in admirable surroundings. Behind the fountain, there is the Podestà Palace (1255): a highly evocative monument, defined as one of the prime examples of gothic style in the Marches. On the north side of the square, appears the Vescovile Palace: once the ancient residence of the city’s Priors that was destroyed by the collapse of the tower and then reconstructed. Since 1729 is has been the Bishop’s see. The characteristic 16th century façade is sided by the clock tower.

Paper and Watermark Museum

Fabriano is one of the fewest cities in the world where nowadays, paper is still manufactured by hand: evidence of the determination of not closing with this past centuries old tradition. The Paper and Watermark Museum permits to the tourists to be projected on XIV° and XV° century and to live again the magic of that time. Towards the end of the 1200's the craftsmen active in Fabriano were in the habit of countersigning their production with watermarks. Today watermarks represent an important testimony to the perfection obtained by the Fabriano paper mills in this sector, in particular for the production of value paper.
